Where is the Congo rainforest?

The Congo rainforest is in Africa. it also covers up 500 million acres!

How would we get there?

  • 16 hours to fly from Bristol to Kinshasa
  • 137 hrs to drive, via the Trans-Saharan highway. You'd need to get the ferry from Spain to Algeria.
  • 1,663 hrs to walk

Here are the countries in the Congo rainforest: 

  • Cameroon
  • Central African republic 
  • Republic of Congo 
  • Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)
  • Equatorial Guinea 
  • Gabon
Approximately two-thirds of the Congo Rainforest is in the DRC. There is 264 million acres there which is 60% of Central Africa's lowland forest cover.

I looked up the flags of the countries in the rainforest. My favourite is the DRC flag, as I like the light blue and the star.

The cool insects of the Congo Rainforest

I decided to write about the insects of the rainforest because I feel like I might find some really cool ones. I'm hoping to find a type of Mantis.  Insects live in different layers of the rainforest, some in the canopy and some on the forest floor and understory. They are like tribes.  There are over 370,000 types of beetle in the Congo Rainforest alone! Some of the cool insects I have found have great names, including the Banana Spider and the Army Worm. The great thing about Army Worms is that they march together in a big group from crop to crop.  Carpenter ants bury through wood with their teeth. They can lift seven times their weight with their teeth! Ants live together in main communities called colonies.  Carpenter Ant Insects can be very loud, especially at night. What is the weather like in the Congo Rainforest?

The Seasons The Congo rainforest has a tropical climate year round with lots of precipitation and heavy humidity and temperatures. There are two seasons in the Congo rainforest. One called the rainy season and one called the dry season. The rainy season is from March to November. And the dry season goes from December to February. My Dad helped me understand using Excel to create charts. I typed in all the data myself. We have made two charts. The first chart measures the average rainfall each month in the Congo Rainforest. As you can see October has the most amount of rain and July has the least.  The chart below shows you the average temperature in the Congo Rainforest. The hottest time is in August. The coldest time is in October.
